How to Improve the Performance of Formaldehyde Plant?

How to improve the performance of formaldehyde plant (silver contact process)?


With close to 30(thirty) years development, formaldehyde production process has reached a relatively stable level. There is limited space to improve the plant performances by reducing methanol consumption, however, improvements could be made in energy saving, pollution control, and intensive production, which are summarized into four aspects.


A. Methanol Storage Tank Energy Saving & Pollution Control

We suggest formalin manufacturers shall take such measures as below to reduce the methanol loss caused by natural evaporation:

a. Use internal floating roof storage tanks instead of fixed tanks to reduce the air chamber capacity

b. Recover methanol from the non-return valve or vent-off valve

c. Add water spraying facility or increase the water spraying rate for low temperature


B. Comprehensive Employment of Waste Heat from Formalin Production

Our target is to generate as much steam and electricity as possible from the formaldehyde plant. Suggestions include:

a. Employ the reaction heat as the heating source for over-heater to reduce steam consumption

b. Employ the heat of the first absorber formalin to generate electricity before evaporating methanol

c. Make use of the flue gas from the off-gas boiler to preheat air and feeding water.

d. Use higher efficiency off-gas boiler

C. Wide Application of DCS Control System and On-line Formalin Analyzer

The combined use of DCS control system and on-line formalin analyzer makes possible the realization of safety-stability-optimization-full capacity running-long period production.


D. Reasonable Use of Polymerization Inhibitor

Due to the unstable property of formaldehyde, it will have self-polymerization into paraformaldehyde during production or storage as long as the iron content rises, the acidity increases or the temperature decreases, which is invisible loss for manufacturers. By reasonable use of polymerization inhibitor will not only avoid self-polymerization and reduce consumption but also largely extend the formalin storage life, which is especially important for low methanol containing formalin manufacturers.
